Tutor

My course Write, Publish & Market Your Own Book took place for several terms between 2010 and 2012 at Mosman Community College. Information about the course was advertised in their printed program and on their website:

"Do you have a book project on the go or always wanted to write your own book but didn’t know how? Here is an opportunity to create your own book and "put it out there"! You learn about research, writing, editing, formatting, publishing and marketing. After this course, you could have your book released soon (depending on where you are at with your project). Sonja K. Goernitz has published several books, produced a monthly Writers magazine and worked as a researcher and editor for Peter FitzSimons since 2005. She worked for media in Germany, the USA, in Japan and in Australia. In 2002, she completed her MA in International Communication with a focus on media & communication at Macquarie University. Being a passionate writer she writes every day."

A photo-book with the main points of my course is available at the National Library of Australia and the State Library of New South Wales. An ebook edition of this book (without most illustrations) is available on Amazon (published: August 2012).

The managers of the Pittwater YHA, Sarah Polomka and Michael Doherty, and I offered the first writing retreat at their hostel on the long Labour Day weekend in 2012 (28 September – 1 October*).

Six students joined the course, including Sarah and Michael. Despite having a cold and almost loosing my voice, I enjoyed teaching the class. The content is the same as at my course Write, Publish & Market Your Own Book at Mosman Community College.

This time students came from Belrose, St Ives, Cremorne and Morning Bay. To get to the hostel, you need to catch the ferry from Church Point to the Halls wharf, take a bush walk up the hill and then enjoy the stunning views over Pittwater's fifty shades of green.

We covered research, writing, editing, formatting, publishing and marketing. Projects included two biographies about fathers, one local history photo-book about the house in the 1920s (the YHA moved into it in 1967), one fantasy novel and one business guide based on e-commerce experience.

We are thinking about offering this Pittwater Writing 'Treat again in 2013.

* We decided to expand the course, which was pleasant for all.
